Popular Reconstructive Plastic Surgeries- Discussed

Many people suffer from body and facial abnormalities resulting from infections, injuries, congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, aging, diseases, or tumors. Thankfully, these can be corrected with reconstructive plastic surgeries. As per the expert Dr. Shilpi Bhadani, an expert plastic surgeon in Gurgaon at SB Aesthetics, ‘Reconstructive plastic surgeries are usually performed to improve one’s body functions but they can even be done to create a more appealing normal appearance and boost self-esteem. They can treat a wide range of conditions from head to toe and from newborns to the very elderly’.

Depending upon the issue that needs to be corrected, the plastic surgery option is chosen by the surgeon. A detailed review is done of the patient’s medical records and the unique case of the patients are evaluated based on their medical necessities and desired results. The surgeon will help the patient weigh all possible surgical options and together both of them can decide which one would best suit the patient. Some Most Demanding Reconstructive Plastic Surgeries performed at SB Aesthetics, Best Clinic for Plastic Surgery in Gurgaon by Dr. Shilpi Bhadani includes:

1.  Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, also called an eye lift, is an operation performed on the eyelids. It is of two kinds: Upper eyelid surgery and Lower eyelid surgery. Upper blepharoplasty is done to treat droopy eyelids and even improve peripheral eyesight in older people by getting rid of excess skin from their upper eyelids which may hang over the eyelashes and get in the way of their vision. Lower blepharoplasty is carried out to treat under-eye bagginess by removal of extra skin and fats from the lower eyelids. This surgery is usually done for aesthetic purposes to combat the eyelid aging process.

For patients undergoing both upper and eyelid blepharoplasty together, the overall surgery may end in about 2 hours. The surgeon will likely inject local anesthesia around the eye and provide oral sedation. If the surgery is carried out in a surgical center or hospital, IV sedation is usually provided to the patient.

Firstly, upper eyelid surgery is conducted wherein the surgeon usually cuts along the natural lines of the eyelids. Through these incisions, the surgeon separates the skin from the underlying fats and muscles and then excises the extra skin and even excess fat or muscles if indicated. Next, the cuts are closed with very small sutures. For lower eyelid surgery, the surgeon makes a hidden incision inside the lower eyelid to remove fat bulges.

2.  Abdominoplasty After Pregnancy or Weight Loss

Giving birth to a baby or losing weight is a joyful thing for women but both of them can come with a price i.e. hanging, sagging skin, and excess fat in the belly which could be embarrassing. In addition, the women may also have diastasis recti wherein the abdominal muscles become weak and are no longer able to support the belly and internal organs. Thankfully, abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery can be a considerable option for women who want to enhance their figure and boost their self-esteem.

The surgery involves cutting away extra skin, tightening or fixing the separated abdominal muscles, and removal of excess stubborn belly fat. It may even help get rid of stretch marks. Following the surgery, the surgeon will suture the cuts and ask the patient to wear a compression garment to ensure that the skin is fitted into new shapes and contours. It may take up to three months to notice the final results.

Abdominoplasty can be of different kinds including Complete Abdominoplasty or Full Tummy Tuck and Mini Abdominoplasty or Partial Tummy tuck. During Full Tummy Tuck, a horizontal cut is made from the navel to the pubic bone. Through the incision, the surgeon pulls back the belly skin, removes the extra fat via liposuction, and repairs the abdominal muscles as required. The belly skin may be pulled down, a new navel may be made, and excess tissue may be excised. Overall surgery lasts for about 2-3 hours.

During Partial Tummy Tuck, the surgeon makes an incision below the navel and the excess fat and skin is removed. It is recommended for people having loose skin below the belly button and less sagging skin after their weight loss or post-pregnancy.

Some people go for Circumferential Abdominoplasty after their weight loss or pregnancy to get rid of extra skin and fat in the back and sides.

3.  Thigh and Arm Lift After Weight Loss

It’s a great achievement to overcome obesity. However, after losing a significant amount of weight, people often end up having loose skin and stubborn fatty deposits on their inner thighs and upper arms. The hanging skin can lead to painful chafing and irritation, and highly influence how people look and feel when going about their normal routine activities. The good news is surgical intervention can help restore the thigh and arm contours for people having stabilized body weight but not pleasing the look of their thighs or arms.

A thigh lift surgery or Thighplasty is usually of two kinds. One involves the removal of the skin crescent in the upper inner thigh and hides the cut in the groin folds. The other combines this skin crescent with a vertical extension to create a T-shaped cut, which can be further extended to tighten up surplus skin all around the thigh. Incisions are closed with absorbable stitches. Liposuction can be performed to get rid of residual fat and improve the thigh contour.

An arm lift surgery or Brachioplasty involves making of least noticeable incision usually in the back or inside of the arms. Through the incision, the surgeon resculpts the shape of the arm and eliminates any extra, hanging skin. It is similar to a thigh lift procedure.

4.  Breast Reconstruction After Cancer Treatment

Breast cancer can be prevented or treated by mastectomy- an operation wherein the entire breast is removed. Such breast cancer patients do have the option to rebuild the shape of their removed breasts through another surgery known as Breast reconstruction surgery.

There are several ways to rebuild the breasts including the use of breast implants- silicone and saline implants or by using autologous tissues.

Breast reconstruction can be performed either at the same time as the mastectomy (called immediate reconstruction) or after mastectomy incisions have healed and the therapy for breast cancer is over (called delayed reconstruction). The latter can happen even in months or years following the mastectomy. If mastectomy does not preserve the nipple and areola, the final stage of breast reconstruction ensures that these are re-created. Sometimes, breast reconstruction is performed even on healthy breasts or contralateral breasts so that both the breasts match in their shape and size as well as symmetry.

If using breast implants, these are surgically placed underneath the breast skin or chest muscle that is left after mastectomy. For saline breast implants, firstly a tissue expander is placed which is later filled with sterile saline during periodic doctor visits following the surgery. The silicone implants are directly placed into the breast.

In the case of autologous tissue reconstruction, the surgeon takes out a flap having skin, fat, blood vessels, and sometimes muscles from some part of the woman’s body and uses it to rebuild her breasts. Mostly, these flaps are taken from the abdomen or back and sometimes buttocks or thighs.
